Your Chops Will Fall Apart if You Don't Do This

I'm in Chicago for a few days. And you know what? Skyscrapers are amazing. Every time I'm here I can't help but appreciate them. I think most people would agree, but the thing that impresses me the most is frequently overlooked by other people. Let me explain… Most people look up and are in awe of everything they see towards the sky. And rightfully so - it's impressive! But the thing that REALLY impresses me is the amount of engineering and construction that went into building the foundation of the building and supports everything reaching towards the sky. Because without a strong and thoughtful foundation, every skyscraper would collapse in a second. And guess what… The same is true for your drumming. Most people look at the fancy stuff on the surface and are amazed at the talent of individuals who play fast Flam Drags and insane Book Reports… But they neglect to look at the fundamentals that the individual developed to support all that stuff. And since they don't see the value and importance of a solid foundation, they go home and try to play all the fancy stuff WITHOUT creating and establishing a solid foundation. See the problem here? It's not good news. Because just like a skyscraper, if you try to build your chops on a shaky foundation, they're going to completely fall apart. So make the time to strengthen your fundamentals and develop a rock-solid foundation that enables you to play all that fancy stuff with ease. After all, if you do that, the sky will be the limit.
